Typically clinics are held once a week after school, in Spring, Fall and Winter, in
6 - 8 week sessions. For current schedules, click here. Children are taught skating, stick-handling, game fundamentals and teamwork. In an atmosphere of fun, volunteer coaches serve as mentors stressing responsibility, character development and teamwork. All participants must maintain average or better grades in school. Children are welcome to continue in the program through intermediate levels, and those wishing to compete at the team level may do so through grants to existing competitive youth hockey programs. (See advanced programs/grants below.)
2. Summer Camps
With the support of partner Canadian Hockey Enterprises, NJGA hosts students at a four day summer camp in Lake Placid, at the historic Olympic Center. This program has very limited availability, with enrollment awarded based upon age, skill level and academic achievement.
Children wishing to skate locally during the summer months can apply for enrollment through NJGA to summer hockey day camp programs at local rinks. These placements are also available on a very limited basis.
3. Advanced Programs/Grants
NJGA does not field a competitive youth hockey team, though we plan to in the future. For those children whose skill has developed to the appropriate level, NJGA offers placement, through scholarship grants, when possible, to outside programs such as youth in-house league play, town recreational programs and travel team programs.
4. Tutoring/Homework Support
In 2007, NJGA began a tutoring and homework support program for those children enrolled in the program in need of additional help with academics. Qualified high school volunteers are matched to NJGA participants to help support improved grades and work habits. (To apply as a high school volunteer, click here.) High school mentors are also encouraged to invite participants to outside events including their own high school hockey games, NHL games, etc.
